I thought it was due time to give an update on where we're at with Lil D and his/our Autism journey.
Dallas and Lil D have been attending a class called Jumpstart at SARRC (Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center) and it has been a very positive experience! Dallas said he's going to be sad when it ends. They go to SARRC twice a week for 2.5 hours each time. I've only attended one of the sessions and it was really good getting to participate in the parent training portion where we learned some tips and tricks on how to best play and interact with Lil D to get more speech out of him and to start to mold some behaviors such as sitting at a table without throwing a fit about it.
I plan on having Dallas write a post more about how the class went and his review and takeaways.
Another big thing happening is that we now have an in home therapist working with Lil D! He seems to really like her as they hit it off from the start. The timing and scheduling of all of these things have made us feel very blessed and that God has had his hand in our journey.
We've gone from diagnosis to in home care in four months. We had just changed to my insurance for 2014 which ended up being a blessing since Dallas stepped down at work and since my insurance has provided great coverage. We've heard some horror stories about people paying hundreds of dollars to get a diagnosis and then their insurance not covering anything. So that's where we're at!
-Lil D first and foremost! This kid is such a sweet kid with a big heart and we'll do whatever it takes to help him.
-We got his diagnosis through a research study so it didn't cost us any money, in fact we received payment for being involved.
-We switched insurance providers, and my insurance actually covers therapy.
-We found a group we liked and got a therapist in home to work with Dallas and her schedule is open and works well with Lil D's school schedule.
-We got into a Jumpstart class fairly quick we thought we'd have to wait until October 2014.
-Jumpstart ends the Wednesday before we leave for vacation and school start the Monday after we get back, we did not plan it to work out that well, it just did!
-The continued love and support from our friends and family.
I randomly read this article , it had me in tears and I found myself nodding my head in agreement of so much of what was said.
